HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Portland men's tennis team took the doubles point before falling to the BYU Cougars 5-2 in a neutral site match at the UH Tennis Complex. The Pilots fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Cougars move to 2-0.
Portland grabbed the early advantage by claiming the doubles point. Freshman Eli Noel made his dual season debut partnering with Tom Garcia to post a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot over Tygen Goldammer and Alex Edmonston. BYU won 6-3 at No. 2 and then Portland's top tandem of Nikola Keremedchiev and Cade Fernando outlasted Adam Chodur and Otto Schreiner in a tiebreaker to clinch.
Pilot sophomore Lucas Kimelman picked up another point with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against David Duong. Tom Garcia pushed Yubel Ubri to three sets at No. 2 but came up short. BYU earned the win with straight set victories at the other four positions.
"It was a tough battle today against a good team," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We had some chances but they just stepped up in some key spots. We had a really nice doubles win, with Eli stepping in for his first match win and Cade and Nikola winning in a breaker against a good team. Lucas had a really solid win at No. 4 singles but we just ran out of gas. We have a bit of a bug running through the team which kept one of our guys out and had a couple others throwing up on changeovers, but we battled and just couldn't get over the hump in a few key spots."
Portland will conclude their trip to Hawaii with a dual match against the host 'Bows on Saturday at 6 p.m. (PT) at the UH Tennis Complex.
