PULLMAN, Wash. – Portland's short bench couldn't overcome a hot-shooting Washington State team in a 104-74 West Coast Conference loss Saturday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum.
The Pilots (10-14, 3-8 WCC) dressed just eight scholarship players on the heels of a rash of recent injuries and illness. Freshman point guard Joel Foxwell scored a team-high 21 points.
Eemeli Yalaho led five Cougars (11-13, 6-5) in double figures with 26 points and nine rebounds.
WSU shot 55 percent from the field including 16-of-31 from three-point range. The Pilots finished at 43 percent overall and 5-for-19 from beyond the arc.
How it Happened
The Cougars caught fire early and made 10-of-17 first half three-pointers to create separation. Washington State led by as much as 24 late in the opening period before taking a 53-31 into intermission.
Portland cut the deficit to 58-41 after consecutive three-pointers from Mikah Ballew and Joel Foxwell early in the second half. Ballisager Webb's layup and a Foxwell runner put the Pilots within 63-47, but that would be as close as it would get down the stretch.
Game Notes
» Joel Foxwell recorded his eight 20-point game of the season.
» Foxwell, the WCC leader in assists, matched his season-low with two for the game.
» Pilot freshman G Dante Censori-Hercules grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
» James O'Donnell added 16 points off the bench.
