SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer swept the weekly WCC honors, with Diego Rosas winning Offensive Player of the Week and Miguel-Angel Hernandez Defensive Player of the Week. It's the sixth straight week the Pilots have won at least one of the awards.
This is the first time this year that Rosas and Hernandez have won the awards. Rosas had four assists over the week, assisting on both game-winning goals for the Pilots. Most prominently, Rosas broke the program record for assists in a career, now sitting at 37 assists. He's just the seventh NCAA Division I player since 1998 to reach 37 assists for his career, and he is the first WCC player to reach 25 assists in WCC play alone ever. He's fifth all-time in WCC history in assists.
With his performance, Rosas reached 10 assists on the year, becoming the first WCC player to 10 assists this season. His nine assists in WCC play alone are the most by any player in WCC history for a single season. He is second in the nation in the category as well. He's the first player since Scott Benedetti in 1988 to post back-to-back seasons of 10 assists or more.
Hernandez, meanwhile, was in goal for both of Portland's wins this week, posting a shutout against Seattle U last Wednesday. That shutout was the sixth he's posted this season for Portland, leading the WCC. His 19 career shutouts are good for seventh all-time for Portland. Against the Broncos last Saturday, Hernandez had the save on a penalty kick to keep the Pilots ahead.
No. 21 Portland claimed the WCC regular season crown over the weekend after defeating the Santa Clara Broncos 5-2. It's their first title since 2016 and just the seventh in program history. It's been a dominant stretch for the Pilots, with their eight-match winning streak being their longest since the 1992 season and their 6-0-0 record in WCC play being a program best. Their 25 goals in WCC play are the most in program history as well as their plus-17 goal differential.
The Pilots will look to keep it rolling against the Pacific Tigers this Halloween. Kickoff in Stockton is set for 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
