SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Portland Pilots got locked in a pitcher's duel with the Purdue Boilermakers, allowing two runs in the bottom of the ninth to fall 2-1. The Pilots and Boilermakers are now split at one win each.
Will Labonte was stellar in his Pilot debut, debuting in relief for the Pilots and throwing 5.1 innings with just four hits and no runs allowed. It's the first time a Pilot true freshman has thrown more than five innings with no runs allowed in their debut in at least the 2000s.
Morgan Codron pitched 1.2 innings in the start with two strikeouts and no runs or hits allowed while Alex Via took the loss in his Pilot debut, going 1.2 innings and allowing two runs with three strikeouts. Carter Gaston faced two batters as well.
The Pilots accumulated just five hits in the game and one run. Brady Bean went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and was the only Pilot with multiple hits. Jonas Salk drove in the lone run for the Pilots on a sacrifice fly. Dakota Chun, Gage Bruce and Cody Nitowitz all recorded hits, with Nitowitz hitting a double with his knock.
How it Happened
It was a low-scoring affair all the way through offensively, with Labonte and the Pilot defense controlling the action most of the way. The lone run for Portland came in the top of the ninth, with Salk driving it to center field to bring home Bruce. The Boilermakers loaded the bases in the ninth and drove in two runs off a single for the win.
