SUGAR LAND, Texas – It was a back-and-forth affair in the series finale between the Portland Pilots and the Purdue Boilermakers, with Portland ultimately falling 10-7 after a late surge from the Boilermakers. The loss drops Portland to 1-2 on the year.
Portland had the long ball going for them on Sunday with three homers, a single-game total the Pilots hit just six times last year. Cole Katayama-Stall was responsible for two of those homers, going 2-for-3 overall with three RBI's. It's the first time Katayama-Stall has hit multiple homers in a game for his career, and he now has 11 through just 53 career games. Nolan Miller hit the other homer for the Pilots, a two-run shot, and was 2-for-5 overall. The homer was the second of his career. Brady Bean went 1-for-4 with an RBI as well.
Trey Swygart earned his first start on the mound while batting third in the lineup as well. Swygart went four innings in the start, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out three batters. Ky Hoskinson made his Pilot debut on the mount, throwing two innings and allowing two runs, while Aaron Louis and Logan Anderson closed things out, with Louis taking the loss. The Pilots had four errors defensively as well.
How it Happened
Katayama-Stall led things off with a solo shot in the first inning, taking a ball deep to right center to immediately put the Pilots on top. The first homer of the year for Portland put them up 1-0.
Purdue responded the following two innings with a home run in the second – which kicked off a stretch of four-straight scoring innings – and an RBI single in the third. Miller's moon shot soon followed in the fourth, with the Eugene native sending a ball over the right field wall to bring home himself and Jonas Salk and give Portland back a 3-2 lead.
The bottom of the fourth saw Purdue hit another solo shot to immediately tie things back up at three a piece. But that tie didn't last long, as Katayama-Stall stepped up to the plate and launched it over the wall down the right field line for his second homer of the day and the first multi-homer game of his career. The Pilots led 4-3 halfway through the fifth.
Purdue scored on a wild pitch to tie things up in the bottom of the fifth. Bean's RBI single put Portland back on top in the seventh, but the Boilermakers retook the lead in bottom of the inning with a double and a score off an error.
The Boilermakers tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth, giving them a five-run lead. The Pilots had one last chance in the top of the ninth, loading up the bases multiple times and scoring runs on a walk and a wild pitch. But back-to-back strikeouts closed things out for Purdue 10-7.
