NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Portland Pilots Baseball fended off the CSUN Matadors late to secure a 5-4 win on the road. The win puts the Pilots at 2-2 on the year.
Leo Cote was stellar for the Pilots at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's. Nolan Miller put together a 1-for-4 outing, notching an RBI and two runs while Dakota Chun went 1-for-4 with an RBI single. The Pilots had five runs on seven hits total.
Carter Gaston was stellar in the start, going 5.1 inning with no runs and just two hits allowed along with three strikeouts. He earned his first win of the season and the second for a Pilot. Aaron Louis, JT Landwehr and Alex Via also all made appearance, with Via earning the save.
How it Happened
The Pilots came out hot, driving home three runs in the opening inning. Dakota Chun and Leo Cote both brought runners home on RBI singles while Nolan Miller got a runner home on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0 Pilots early.
Cote did more damage in the third inning, bringing home miller on a one-run double to center field. Cote got his first extra-base hit of the season and put the Pilots up 4-0 in the process.
Portland scored one more run in the fifth on a failed pickoff from the Matadors to make it 5-0. The Matadors pushed late, hitting a two-run moon shot in the seventh inning and scoring twice on a walk and an error to make it just 5-4 Portland. In a tight spot, Alex Via held off the Matadors in the final inning to help deliver a 5-4 win for Portland.
Game Notes
- Leo Cote went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's to lead the Pilots. His two hits are the first of his career.
- Nolan Miller and Dakota Chun both had RBI hits today, going 1-for-4.
- Chun has earned a hit in the first four games of his college career.
- Carter Gaston went 5.1 innings with no runs allowed, just two hits and three strikeouts. It's the first time since 2024 he's gone over five innings with no runs allowed.
- Gaston is the second Pilot to officially record a win this year.
- Alex Via is the first Pilot to record a save this season.
