SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots couldn't manufacture the runs to take down the Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday, dropping the first game in their three-game series 4-1. The Pilots fall to 2-3 on the year.
Cole Katayama-Stall hit his third home run of the year in the contest, going 1-for-4 overall. Katayama-Stall has 12 home runs through his first 55 games, the most by a Pilot in that many games since Hunter Montgomery (2018-19). Dakota Chun extended his hitting streak to five games, becoming the first true freshman to get a hit in his first five games since 2021. Jonas Salk went 2-for-3 as well.
The Pilots got five stellar innings of relief from Kaden Segel, who allowed no runs and just two hits while striking out five. Trey Newmann started for Portland and took the loss, going the first three innings and allowing all four runs.
How it Happened
The Gauchos struck first, scoring on an RBI single in the first and loading the bases for an RBI walk and an RBI single as well. After conceding three runs across the first two innings, Katayama-Stall put the Pilots on the board. He hit a solo bomb in the top of the third inning that soared over the right field wall, giving the sophomore his third homer of the year and making it just 3-1 Gauchos.
Santa Barbara put the lead back at three runs with a home run in the fourth inning from Nick Husovsky. The Pilots couldn't get the runs to overcome the deficit, falling 4-2.
