SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots came up just short against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, falling 3-2 in the second of three games. The loss moves Portland to 2-4 on the year and clinches the series for the Gauchos.
Brady Bean was the top batter on the day for Portland, going 1-for-3 with a double, a hit by pitch and an RBI. Isaac Pfeifer was credited with the other RBI in the sixth inning with a walk. The Pilots totaled just three hits on the day, with Cole Katayama-Stall and Cody Nitowitz recording the other two hits along with Bean.
Logan Anderson made his first start this season on Saturday, going 3.1 innings with three runs counted against him and two hits allowed along with five strikeouts. The Pilots had four pitchers make appearances on the day, with Anderson, Trey Swygart, Ky Hoskinson and Grady Keljo all making appearances. Swygart was solid in relief, allowing no hits or runs with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
How it Happened
The Gauchos got on the board first with a solo home run from Noah Karliner in the second inning and then two runs in the fourth off a walk and a wild pitch from Hoskinson, putting the Pilots in an early 3-0 hole. But the Pilots chipped away at that lead in the sixth, with Bean bringing home a runner with an RBI double. Pfeifer walked with the bases loaded to add another run and make it just 3-2 Santa Barbara.
Unfortunately for Portland, the bats couldn't break through. The Pilots ultimately fell 3-2.
