SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – It was a pitcher's duel through six innings, but the Portland Pilots fell after giving up six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to fall 6-2. Portland drops to 2-5 on the year.
Will Labonte once again allowed no runs in his appearance, the first start of his Pilot career. The Canadian went 4.1 innings with no runs allowed, just two hits and seven strikeouts. His seven K's are the most by a Pilot pitcher this season and the most by a Pilot true freshman since Morgan White in 2019.
Aaron Louis, Alex Via and Quin Dufort all made appearances in relief, with Dufort's appearance being his first of the season and of his career. Via was credited with the loss after conceding three runs, with only two officially counting against him. It's his second loss of the season.
Offensively, the Pilots had two runs on four hits. Carter Stewart had an RBI single in a 1-for-2 effort. Dakota Chun went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored while Nolan Miller and Cody Nitowitz each went 1-for-3 as well. Cole Katayama-Stall brought in a run with a sacrifice fly for the other RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board first, scoring in the third inning. Chun got on base with a walk and then was brought home on a sacrifice fly from Katayama-Stall, putting the Pilots up 1-0 early.
Portland held that lead for most the game, with Labonte and Louis both dealing. But the Gauchos took over in the seventh, loading the bases and scoring three runs in the inning to make it 3-1 Santa Barbara.
The Pilots responded in the eighth with one run. Chun made his way on with a double and then was brought home by Stewart with an RBI single, making it just 3-2 Gauchos. But three runs in the eighth for the Gauchos created a deficit the Pilots couldn't overcome, with the Gauchos winning 6-2.
