PORTLAND, Ore. – Brady Bean, Carter Stewart and Cole Katayama Stall all went yard as the Portland Pilots beat Saint Mary's 8-5 Saturday in the second of a three-game West Coast Conference series at Joe Etzel Field. The three homers matched the most Portland has hit in a game this season.
The Pilots (16-8, 4-1 WCC) had their bats come alive with eight runs on 11 hits. Stewart belted his first career homer and drove in three runs, while Katayama Stall was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Bean scored twice and walked in addition to his dinger.
Portland committed just one error and stranded seven runners, while the Gaels (14-12, 2-3) collected nine hits, an error and left 11 runners on base.
Kaden Segel (1-1) was stellar out of the bullpen to earn the win. He tossed 4.1 innings allowing just one run and striking out four. Alex Via picked up his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilots drew first blood with a Jonas Salk RBI double scoring Nolan Miller in the bottom of the first inning.
The Gaels plated two runs in the second and another in the third to go up 3-1 before the Pilot bats came alive in the bottom of the third.
Bean drilled an opposite field solo home run over the right center field fence. After a Nolan Miller walk, Katayama Stall drilled a two-out, 3-2 breaking ball down the right field line for a two run dinger to give Portland a 4-3 lead.
Jared Mettam belted a solo homer for Saint Mary's in the fourth to tie it back up, but the Pilots quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with a Brooks Avery leadoff triple. He then scored on a groundout to second by Stewart.
Stewart gave the Pilots breathing room in the sixth inning when he drilled a ball over the left field fence to make it 7-4. It was a two-run shot scoring Brooks Avery who got aboard via walk.
Ian Armstrong pulled one back with a solo bomb to center in the seventh, but the Pilots responded with an RBI single from Miller scoring Bean in the eighth to cap the scoring.
