PORTLAND, Ore. – Buoyed by 12 runs in the fourth inning, the Portland Pilots put together a statement win Thursday, dominating the Holy Cross Crusaders in their first game 15-3. A seven-inning contest, the win puts Portland at 5-6 on the year.
Several Pilots shined at the plate, with the Bluff Boys bashing in 15 runs on 14 hits, both totals being season highs. 12 of those runs came in the fourth inning, the most for Portland in any game this season and the most in an inning since 2022, when they scored 14 runs against the Saint Mary's Gaels in a single inning.
Brady Bean had went 3-for-4, matching a season-high while adding three runs. Dakota Chun, Leo Cote and Cody Nitowitz each had two hits and three RBI's, with Cote smashing his first home run of the season and of his career. Trey Swygart and Isaac Pfeifer rounded out the multi-hit games for the Pilots, with Pfeifer's being the first of his career.
On the mound, Carter Gaston allowed no runs in his second start, conceding just five hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. He's the first Pilot to have multiple wins on the season, now sitting at 2-0. Callum Young, Kaden Starr and Grady Keljo all made appearances on the mound as well, with Thursday being the first appearances for Young and Starr this season.
How it Happened
Portland got off to a big lead when Chun brought in three runs with a double in the second inning. That gave the Pilots a good advantage from the jump. Then the fourth inning opened the floodgates, making it all Pilots from there on out. Cote hit his first home of the year to bring in the first two runs, then Trey Swygart and Jonas Salk had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0 Portland.
With two outs on the board, the Pilots proceeded to score eight runs. Four of Portland's eight runs came on walks, with the other four coming on big time hits from Cody Nitowitz and Brady Bean. Nitowitz drove in three runs on a triple and Bean a run on a single. Holy Cross scored three runs in the seventh, but the Pilots closed it out 15-3 without much worry.
