PORTLAND, Ore. – Once again propelled by a stellar fourth inning, the Portland Pilots took down the Holy Cross Crusaders 10-4 to take a 2-0 lead in the series. The Pilots improve to 6-6 with the win.
The Pilots were led at the plate by Brady Bean, who put together an impressive outing. He went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI's, with his four hits being both a season high and matching a career high. He's the only Pilot to notch four hits in a game this season. Bean's homer was his second of the year. Nolan Miller had three hits along with a walk and drove in an RBI to close out the multi-hit Pilots.
Trey Newmann went five innings to earn his second win of the season. Three runs, with only one earned, counted against Newmann along with seven hits. Newmann struck out five as well. Kaden Segel allowed just one unearned run in four innings of relief to earn his first save this season, striking out three.
How it Happened
Holy Cross scored first on an RBI single in the second inning, but Portland didn't let the lead last too long. In the bottom of the third, Bean smashed a solo home run that evened the game at one a piece. The homer was Bean's second of the year.
For the second straight game, the Pilots put together an offensive explosion in the fourth. They scored eight runs in the inning, taking advantage of miscues by the Crusaders. Cody Nitowitz and Bean had RBI hits that brought in three runs combined, then an infield error helped bring Bean home. After a hit by pitch brought home another run, Miller roped a single to make it 9-1 Portland.
Portland added one more run off an error in the fifth inning after the Crusaders had scored two themselves. The scoring cooled off from there, with the Pilots earning the 10-4 win after one more run for the Crusaders in the eighth.
