PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots clinched the series against the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday with a dominant 13-3 win in eight innings. The Pilots improved to 7-6 on the season and clinched the series.
Portland had three home runs on the way to victory. Nolan Miller led the way for the Pilots, driving in five runs on a 2-for-5 outing with a home run. The homer was his second of the season. Miller's five RBI's are a career high and the most by any Pilot this season. Jonas Salk followed closely behind with a 3-for-5 outing and two RBI's, including the game-sealing home run, his second of the year. Trey Swygart and Cody Nitowitz rounded out the multi-hit batters for Portland, with both players driving in two RBI's and Swygart hitting his first home run.
On the mound, Logan Anderson earned the win with another stellar outing. He went five innings with just two runs allowed, five hits and two strikeouts, earning his second win on the mound. Swygart earned the save in addition to his great day at the plate. Swygart went three-innings on the mound, allowing just one run, three hits and striking out five batters, a career high.
How it Happened
Miller got the scoring started with his second home run of the season, a three-run shot that quickly made it 3-0 Portland. Nitowitz added the next run with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, quickly putting the Crusaders back on their heels 4-0.
The third inning saw Swygart bring home Salk on a double and then Swygart score later on a balk to make it 6-0 Portland through the first three innings. Holy Cross finally got on the board with two runs in the fifth, but Portland followed that up with another score from Swygart, a solo shot in the bottom of the inning that made it 7-2 Pilots.
The sixth inning saw the Pilots take full control. Nitowitz and Miller both had RBI hits that combined for three runs, then Miller scored on the fielder's choice to make it 11-2 Pilots. Van Coughlin hit a home run in the eighth, but it was too little too late. The Pilots responded with a two-run shot from Salk to end the game early, the Pilots winning 13-3.
