SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Portland men's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision to the New Mexico State Aggies to conclude play at the Golden State Invite on Saturday. The Pilots defeated co-host UC Davis on Friday morning before losing to Nevada in the afternoon.
Portland collected the doubles point to open the match. The No. 1 tandem of Nikola Keremedchiev and Cade Fernando extended their winning streak to eight matches after defeating Roko Stipetic and Tobias Wallin 7-5. The Aggies won on court 2 before Tom Garcia and Eli Noel clinched with a 6-4 win versus Holland Snell and Laurendi Fischer.
All six singles matches were settled in straight sets. Fernando capped a phenomenal weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 against Stipetic to make it 2-0. Keremedchiev then knocked off Wallin 6-1, 6-2 to give the Pilots a 3-0 edge.
NMSU would battle back and win the other four singles matches to pull off the comeback victory.
Portland will return home and host the Montana Grizzlies on Friday. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Live coverage links are available at PortlandPilots.com.
