SPOKANE, Wash. – The Portland Pilots dropped Game 2 against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday 11-3, dropping the series. The loss puts Portland at 20-12 overall and 6-5 in WCC play.
Gage Bruce was stellar in the nine-hole today for Portland, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. His three hits match a season high. Cody Nitowitz brought home the other run and went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Will Labonte took his first official loss of the season, going six innings and allowed four runs and six hits. Labonte added six strikeouts as well. Ky Hoskinson and Kaden Starr each pitched an inning, with Starr punching out the side in his inning pitched.
How it Happened
A big second inning for the Zags started the scoring, with Gonzaga scoring on a double, a ground out and a two-run homer to make it 4-0 Gonzaga. Portland scored two runs in the fifth to cut into that lead, scoring on a groundout and an RBI double from Nitowitz to make it 4-2 Bulldogs.
Trey Swygart singled to right field to bring home a runner, making it just 4-3 Gonzaga. But Gonzaga gave themselves significant cushion with five runs in the seventh, making it 9-3 Bulldogs. Another two runs in the eighth put it away for the Bulldogs 11-3.
Game Notes
- Bruce went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. His three hits are a season high.
- Nitowitz had the lone other RBI with a double. He was 1-for-2 with two walks as well.
- Labonte took his first loss of the season, going six innings with four runs and six hits allowed as well as six strikeouts.
- Labonte's six innings pitched match a career high.
