PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots snapped their losing streak with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Dons. The Pilots open the series with a win and improve to 21-14 overall and 6-6 in WCC play.
Cole Katayama-Stall, Cody Nitowitz and Jonas Salk all earned multiple hits on the day, with Katayama-Stall going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI's to lead the way. Nitowitz and Salk went 2-for-4 respectively and Gage Bruce drove in the other two runs for Portland with a double while scoring two himself. Katayama-Stall is the first Pilot to surpass 30 RBI's this season.
On the mound, Kaden Segel got the win in relief, going 4.2 innings with just one unearned run counting against him. Will Labonte started for the Pilots, going 3.1 innings with two runs and three strikeouts. Alex Via earned his eighth save of the year, striking out the final batter to get the save. He adds to his total saves, which is already the most ever by a Pilot true freshman and tied for the ninth most in program history.
How it Happened
San Francisco and Portland both scored one run each in the first inning, with both teams scoring on RBI doubles. Eddison Esquivel brought home the run for San Francisco and Katayama-Stall the run for Portland. That score held until the fourth, when the Dons scored two in the fourth on an error and a sacrifice bunt to make it 3-1 Dons.
That lead didn't hold for the Dons, as the Pilots reclaimed the advantage with four runs in the fifth. Bruce and Katayama-Stall brought home a combined four runners with their RBI hits to make it 5-3 Portland through five innings. That lead held the rest of the way, with Via closing things out with a strikeout to earn secure the win for Portland.
