PORTLAND, Ore. – Trey Newmann had a career day on the mound, but the Portland Pilots could not defeat the San Francisco Dons in Game 2, falling 5-4. The loss drops Portland to 21-15 and 7-7 in WCC play.
Newmann threw a career-high 12 strikeouts on the day, the most by any Pilot pitcher this season. He went six innings with four runs and six hits allowed. Ky Hoskinson officially took the loss, pitching one and a third with just one run allowed, and Alex Via pitched 1.2 innings with no runs and just one hit allowed.
Offensively, Portland struggled early but found four runs in the seventh inning. Three of those came off a pinch-hit homer from Leo Cote, his fourth of the year. Dakota Chun had the other RBI hit for Portland in a 1-for-4 outing and Aaron Louis was the lone Pilot to record multiple hits at 2-for-4.
How it Happened
San Francisco scored mashed a three-run homer in the third inning and scored one more in the fourth off a single to make it 4-0 Dons. Portland struggled at the plate, amassing just two hits on the day up to that point.
Fortunes changed in the seventh, with the Pilots finally getting on the board. All with two outs, the Pilots got an RBI single from Chun and then three runs on the moonshot from Cote to even things up at four.
The Dons broke the tie in the eighth. They scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-4 ball game. Portland couldn't find the runs to overcome it, losing by that score.
Game Notes
- Cote hit his fourth home run of the year with a three-run bomb in a pinch hit.
- Chun is the only other batter for Portland to record an RBI hit, batting 1-for-4 with a single.
- Louis was the only batter to record multiple hits on the day for Portland, batting 2-for-4.
- Newmann's 12 strikeouts were a career-high and the most by a Pilot this season. He allowed four runs in six innings.
