OVERLAND PARK, Kan – The Portland Pilots earned yet another midseason honor on Thursday, with Trey Swygart being named a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.
Swygart, who was named to the preseason watch list as well, is one of just 15 players named a semifinalist for the award and the only to come from the West Coast Conference. The award, named after famed two-way standout at Washington State John Olerud, is one of four awards handed out, including the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award, the National Pitcher of the Year and the Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year award. Will Labonte was also named a semifinalist for the Pitcher of the year.
Swygart's been a key component of the Pilots' pitching and hitting all season. On the mound, Swygart has thrown 35.2 innings primarily in relief, posting a 2.52 ERA with a 4-0 record and 36 strikeouts. He recently posted a 6.1-inning shutout appearance against San Francisco. Offensively, he's appeared at the plate in every game, posting a .269 batting average with three home runs and 20 RBI's.
The Pilots are sitting at 22-16 overall and 8-7 in WCC play. They will take on the Santa Clara Broncos on the road for a three-game series starting on Friday, Apr. 24. That game is set to start at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
