FAIRFIELD, Calif. – The Portland women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to the LMU Lions in Thursday's opening round of the West Coast Conference Tournament at Green Valley Country Club.
Pilot senior Alaia Rubio Perez went out on a winning note with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lidia Gonzalez at No. 1 singles to earn Portland's point.
LMU grabbed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Portland's No. 3 tandem of Meagan Pearson and Kylie Canubida were leading 5-4 when their match was abandoned.
The Lions went ahead 3-0 overall with straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Portland got on the board with Rubio Perez's win, but LMU clinched with a hard-fought, three-set win by Kim-Michaela Zahraj over Nadine Arbaizar Martinez at No. 3.
LMU advances to face top-seeded Pepperdine in Friday's semifinals and the tournament finals are scheduled for Saturday.
