PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots earned the sweep against the No. 21 Oregon Ducks with their 13-9 win at Joe Etzel Field. It's the second win this season over the Ducks, the fourth in a row and the sixth in the last seven matchups between the two teams. Portland reaches 20 wins on the year with the victory, sitting at 20-10.
The Pilots brought the power with 13 runs on 10 hits. Cole Katayama-Stall, Cody Nitowitz and Jonas Salk brought in a combined 10 runs themselves, with Nitowitz and Katayama-Stall earning two hits each as well. Nitowitz had three RBI's and a double while Katayama-Stall hit a three-run homer – his eighth of the year – to earn his three RBI's while reaching base five times. Salk had a three-run homer for his fifth homer and drove in one more run in a 1-for-5 outing for four RBI's total. Leo Cote brought home two with a double while Frankie Rutigliano added an RBI single as well in his season debut.
Five different pitchers threw on the night, with Kaden Segel officially earning the win, his second of the season. He went one and a third with one run and four hits allowed as well as a strikeout. Aaron Louis went three innings in the start with five runs and six hits allowed along with a strikeout.
How it Happened
Oregon started the scoring with a solo homer in the first and an RBI double in the second, making it 2-0 Ducks. Nitowitz put the Pilots on the board, lacing one down the right field line to bring home two runners and tie things up at two apiece.
The Ducks hit their second homer of the night – a three-run shot in the third inning – to retake the lead, but that lead didn't hold. Portland got four runs in the bottom frame, With Cote, Rutigliano and Nitowitz all recording RBI hits. Cote drove in two runs with his double, making it 6-5 Pilots.
Portland scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth to make their lead 7-5. Oregon responded in the seventh inning, however, scoring three runs to retake the lead at 8-7. But the Pilots bounced back in a big way with six runs coming off two separate 3-run homers from Katayama-Stall and Salk, making it 13-8 Pilots. Oregon scored once more, but the Pilots held on for the win.
