MALIBU, Calif. – The Portland Pilots struggled at the plate in their 8-1 loss to the Pepperdine Waves on Saturday. The loss gives the series to the Waves and puts Portland at 25-22 overall and 11-12 in WCC play.
The Pilots narrowly avoided a shutout, scoring one run on six hits. Cody Nitowitz, Carter Stewart and Landon Kauffman were all 2-for-4 on the day, with Stewart driving in the lone run for the Pilots with a solo homer. It was his second of the season. Kauffman's multi-hit day was his first of the season and of his career.
Trey Newmann started for Portland and took the loss, allowing just three earned runs but six total. Newmann struck out six batters still in six innings. Carter Gaston pitched two innings for the Pilots, allowing two runs in two innings while striking out two.
How it Happened
Pepperdine's first few runs came early, with four runs in the second. They took advantage of an error to bring home two runs and then got a two-run homer from Shawn Romero to make it 4-0 Waves. The Waves scored four runs on two different doubles in the fourth and eighth innings to make it 8-0 Pepperdine. Stewart's homer helped the Pilots avoid the shutout, but Portland fell still 8-1.
Game Notes
- Nitowitz, Stewart and Kauffman all went 2-for-4, with Stewart adding a homer.
- Stewart's homer was his second of the year.
- Kauffman's multi-hit game was the first of his career.
- Jonas Salk was hit by a pitch for the 45th time in his career on Saturday, moving him into second place all time for Portland in the category.
- Newmann took the loss, but struck out six batters. It's the fifth time he's struck out at least six batters this year, tied for the most on the Pilots.
