Hjalmarsson, Kaufmann Score as No. 3 Pilots Fall 4-2 to No. 11 Huskies

SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 3 Portland Pilots conceded goals early and couldn't close the gap, falling to the No. 11 Washington Huskies 4-2 in Seattle. The loss drops Portland to 0-1-1 on the year.

Portland's goals came courtesy via the Swedish duo of Anton Hjalmarsson and Oskar Kaufmann. The goal was Hjalmarsson's first of the year, his fifth as a Pilot and the 25th of his college career. Kaufmann's goal was his first of the year and as a Pilot along with the 24th of his career. Joe Highfield and Denzel Akyirem both had assists on the day. Miguel-Angel Hernandez saved eight shots, the second most he's posted in a single game for his career.

How it Happened

Washington came out hot, scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes to take a big lead. The Pilots tried to fend off the Husky attack, but the Huskies drew a penalty in the 35th minute and converted from the spot to make it 4-0 Washington.

Portland avoided the shutout with a goal in the nick of time. Highfield's missile towards the goal from the top of the box was saved, but Hjalmarsson was right there for the follow, giving Portland a goal with just one second to play in the half.

After a scoreless 40 minutes of soccer in the second half, Kaufmann scored in the 86th minute. David Ajagbe played a ball in on the corner kick that pinballed around before landing at Denzel Akyirem's feet. Akyirem's rocket from just inside the box was saved, but Kaufmann was there to clean it up, scoring the goal to cut Washington's lead to two. It was too little too late, as Washington took home the win.

Game Notes
  • Hjalmarsson's goal was his first of the season and his fifth as a Pilot. He's scored 25 goals for his college career dating back to his time at Fort Lewis.
  • Hjalmarsson's 25 goals in NCAA play dating back to his time at Fort Lewis College are the ninth most in college soccer among active players.
  • Kaufmann – who also scored his first goal of the season and as a Pilot – is right behind Hjalmarsson with 24 in his career. That's good for 10th among active players in NCAA.
  • Highfield and Akyirem both had assists with shots on goal.
  • Portland put six shots on frame in the contest.
  • Hernandez's eight saves were the second most he's posted in a game for his career. He surpassed 80 saves for his career with the performance.
