Northwest native Drew Muscatell was hired as an assistant coach during August of 2015. Muscatell came to The Bluff from San Jose State, where he spent the previous year as the video coordinator.
“I couldn't be happier to welcome Drew to the Pilot family,” said Sorenson. “He was raised in the gym as a coach’s son, which is a rare education in the coaching world. He's young, energetic, and eager to learn. Drew will work himself into the fold very quickly and will be a great asset to the program.”
"Thanks to coach Sorenson and Athletic Director Scott Leykam for the opportunity to begin my collegiate coaching career at the University of Portland,” Muscatell said. “I'm excited to be joining this great staff, and I look forward to helping our student-athletes reach their full potential on and off the basketball court. It is easy to tell we are building a special program here on The Bluff, and I'm thrilled to be part it."
With the Spartans, Muscatell was responsible for recording all practices and games. He worked directly with assistant coaches on opposing team scouting reports and he assisted with the breakdown of the practice and game video.
A graduate of the University of Oregon in 2013, Muscatell was a practice player with the Ducks all four years in Eugene.
Muscatell’s father Dan is a long-time coach in collegiate women’s basketball and he’s currently an assistant at San Jose State. Previously Dan was an assistant coach on the Oregon (2009-14) bench after serving as the head coach at Sacramento State for six years (2003-09).
