Trey Watt was promoted to assistant coach for Portland Pilots Baseball ahead of the 2023 spring season after serving as a volunteer assistant since Geoff Loomis took over the Pilots ahead of the 2016 season.
Watt has played a crucial role on both offense and defense, assisting offensively this season while also serving as the catchers coach and defensive scouting coordinator. He’s guided several premier catchers during his time, including MLB player Cooper Hummel in his first year with the Pilots and also Nich Klemp, who broke the school record for hits in a season with 83 and was an All-WCC First Team selection in 2023. Along with his duties on the field, Watt is the point of contact for all Portland Pilots Baseball camps and assists in recruiting.
Watt joined the Pilots after spending seven years at George Fox University as their assistant/pitching coach. Prior to that, Watt had a successful college playing career with the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, where Loomis served as head coach from 2003-15. Watt was a three-time first team All-Northwest Conference pitcher, ranking in the top 10 in school history for innings pitched (231.1), strikeouts (212) and ERA (3.54). He was the second player in PLU history to sign a free agent contract, doing so with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Watt lives in the area with his wife, Brianna, his daughter, Maggiemae, and his son, Malachi.
