Philadelphia Takes Foxhoven 17th Overall in WPS Draft
KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- The Philadelphia Independence selected University of Portland standout Danielle Foxhoven with 17th overall pick of the 2012 Women’s Professional Soccer Draft Friday afternoon during the annual NSCAA Convention.
“I’m really excited and waiting for the coach to call,” Foxhoven said shortly after being drafted. “It’s assumed that anyone coming into the WPS from college is going to have a hard time. It doesn’t guarantee me a spot on the team, but I’m going to do my best.”
Foxhoven exploded onto the scene in 2008 with 16 goals en route to being named the WCC Freshman of the Year, sparking the beginning of an illustrious career on The Bluff. A native of Littleton, Colo., Foxhoven finished her career with 57 goals and 25 assists for a total of 139 points, the fourth highest mark in school history. She is one of only four Pilots to have tallied 50-plus goals in her career (Christine Sinclair, Tiffeny Milbrett, Shannon MacMillan).
Foxhoven’s accomplishments on and off the pitch garnered her well-deserved recognitions. A three-time All-WCC First Team Member, she earned a spot on the WCC All-Academic and Academic All-Region teams all three years she was eligible. After back-to-back years as an Academic All-American, Foxhoven was selected as a Finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
“I’m honored to see my name to show up there,” added Foxhoven, who is preparing to train with the U23 National Team later this month. “It proves how dominant UP is at soccer and it’s an honor to be mentioned in that list of names of people who we have drafted every year.”
Foxhoven joins a growing list of Pilots selected in the short history of the WPS draft. Keelin Winters and Elli Reed were selected in the first round of last year’s draft while Kelsey Davis and Michelle Enyeart were taken in the 2010 draft. Prior to the inaugural season in 2009, six former Pilots were selected for roster spots.
The Atlanta Beat selected UCLA’s Sydney Leroux with the first overall pick of the draft of this year’s draft.
