DES MOINES, Iowa --- University of Portland redshirt freshman Scott Fauble picked off numerous runners late to place 11th in the men’s 10,000-meter race at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday night at Drake Stadium. Fauble, the only freshman among the field of 24 runners, ran a time of 29:30.57 to earn second team All-America honors.
“Fauble ran another amazing race and did it the hard way,” Portland head coach Rob Conner said. “He is a disciplined racer and very patient. His first 5K split was 14:44 and his second 5K was 14:45. You can’t run more even and consistent than that. The tough thing was that he was about 40 meters back of the 22nd runner at the halfway point. He passed 12 guys in the second half of the race.”
Fauble extended Portland’s streak of having at least one participant in the NCAA Track & Field Championships to 21 consecutive seasons.
“I just tried to stay within myself and put myself in the best position to do well,” Fauble said. “I’m extremely happy with how it turned out.”
Fauble entered the meet with the 20th best time among the 24 competitors that qualified at the NCAA Preliminary meets. His time of 30:12.64 at the West Preliminary was good for sixth in the region and punched his ticket to Des Moines.
