PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 17 Portland Pilots men’s cross country overthrew the No. 5 BYU Cougars and reclaimed the top spot in the West Coast Conference on Saturday at the WCC Cross Country Championships. The gutsy performance from the squad marked the 33rd time in 34 years that the Pilots came out on top at the conference championships, collectively earning them U.S. Bank UP Student of the Week honors.
This is the first co-U.S. Bank UP Student of the Week in the award’s first year.
Scott Fauble (2nd; 23:48), Woody Kincaid (3rd; 23:48), and David Perry (5th; 23:41) all finished in the top five for the Pilots. Seniors Lars Erik Malde (9th; 24:10) and Jared Bassett (13th; 24:13) rounded out the team scoring for Portland as the Pilots edged BYU by one point.
Charlie McDonald (18th; 24:22) and Jacob Smith (20th; 24:36) also placed in the top 20 for Portland. Smith garnered WCC Freshman of the Year by finishing atop all other freshman runners in the conference.
