Portland Dominates Southern Utah 86-57
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Thomas van der Mars scored 17 points and a balanced Portland offensive attack lifted the Pilots to an 86-57 victory over Southern Utah Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Kevin Bailey added 16 points and Volodymyr Gerun chipped in 12 off the bench for Portland.
The Pilots (5-3) led 38-22 at the half and led by as much as 35 points late in regulation. Portland outrebounded the Thunderbirds (1-4) by a 47-27 margin, including a 21-3 second half rebounding advantage.
Van der Mars scored 10 of his team-high 17 points in the first half, including an emphatic transition dunk to put the Pilots on top 16-5. A three-pointer by David Carr gave Portland its largest first half lead at 36-18.
Bailey scored 12 second half points to pace the Pilots. His three-pointer pushed the margin to 53-30 then a personal five point run made it 69-41 with 7:49 remaining.
Portland shot 46 percent from the field and held the Thunderbirds to 36 percent overall. The Pilots were also efficient at the free throw line making 18-of-22. The size and experience of Portland's frontline translated to a 40-12 edge in points in the paint and 19-0 margin in second chance scoring.
Freshman point guard Alec Wintering capped an impressive day with 10 assists, four steals and zero turnovers.
Trey Kennedy led the Thunderbirds with 12 points overall.
The Pilots will get a little rest before making the short trip across town to face the Portland State Vikings on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be aired live on Sports 910 with a 30-minute pregame show.
