STOCKTON, Calif. – Portland men's tennis had a successful first day on Friday at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center. The Pilots went 5-0 in the first round and three of the six competing Portland players are through to the Round of 32.
Seniors Michail Pervolarakis, Mathieu Garcia and junior Carlos Donat will continue in the main draw on Friday.
Pervolarakis, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, received a first round bye and then defeated Cal's Jackson Suh in three sets.
Mathieu Garcia cruised to a pair of straight set wins against Bailey Gong (Fresno State) and Chris Cajigan (Pacific). Donat, playing in his first matches this season, beat Arshak Ghazaryan (Seattle) and then overcame Calvin Jordaan (Saint Mary's) in three sets.
"Early round matches are always difficult especially when you are the No. 2 seed," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Mike struggled a little bit, but got through. Mathieu picked up two fairly routine wins and Carlos got through two pretty close battles in his fall debut."
Senior Pierre Garcia recorded an impressive first round win over Cal's Bjorn Hoffmann, before losing a marathon three-setter to Pacific's Ross Watson on his home court.
"The highlight of the day was definitely Pierre edging a very good player from Cal," Gross said. "He had lost very decisively to Hoffmann a couple of weeks ago at the Davis tournament, but got some revenge today. He ended up having a match point in his second match but falling just short in the end."
Freshman Tom Hann defeated Daniel Orlita (Pacific) in three sets and then took the first set against No. 7 seed Simon Stevens (Oregon), but Stevens was able to advance in three.
Senior Alex Wallace knocked off Donald Hall (Sacramento State) in straight sets and then was knocked out by seeded Nathan Boniel of Portland State.
"Overall it was an excellent effort today," Gross said. "Tom and Alex both had nice opening round wins, but fell to good players in the next round. We had some very encouraging results today."
Action continues on Friday with two rounds of doubles and more singles. The tournament will run through the weekend and conclude on Monday.
Last year, the Pilots also had a
strong performance at ITA Regionals with four players reaching the Round of 32. Portland joined Cal as the only two programs with multiple quarterfinalists as Mathieu Garcia reached the quarters and Pervolarakis was a semifinalist.
