PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland senior center Philipp Hartwich recorded career-highs of 10 points, 18 rebounds and six blocked shots, but the Portland State Vikings rallied with a 12-0 run to end the game and steal an 80-75 victory in the regular season opener for both schools Saturday night before 3,019 fans at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (0-1) showed their youth and inexperience late as seven freshmen and sophomores played key minutes. Leading 75-68 with 2:23 remaining, the Pilots would go scoreless from that point forward and the Vikings took advantage by forcing turnovers and making big plays.
Senior Bryce Canda made the biggest plays for the Vikings (1-0), converting a fast break layup after a steal to cut the deficit to 75-73. After another turnover led to a Holland Woods fastbreak basket to tie the game, Canda buried a three-pointer after collecting a loose ball with 34 seconds left to give PSU a 78-75 lead.
A missed Portland layup led to free throws for the Vikings and the game was put away.
Portland shot 43 percent overall and held the Vikings to 40 percent, but PSU gained a 26-12 edge in second chance points and 19-11 margin in points off of turnovers. The Pilots committed 17 total turnovers and forced the Vikings into 13.
The Pilots had the range finishing 10-of-20 from three-point land, but made just 19-of-31 free throws. PSU was 10-of-21 from downtown and just 14-of-31 at the stripe.
Portland's heralded recruiting class showed much promise on the night as the Pilots had four players reach double figures and nine of the ten players that saw action scored. Sophomore transfer Josh McSwiggan finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists in his Pilot debut.
Freshman guard Marcus Shaver Jr. came off the bench and ignited the crowd with a variety of dazzling plays to finish with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Sophomore Franklin Porter added 14 points, but fouled out with just over two minutes remaining in a crucial momentum swing.
Hartwich, whose previous career high in scoring was seven points, made all three of his field goal attends and 4-of-9 free throws. His 18 rebounds eclipsed his previous high of 12, while he matched his all-time best game with six blocked shots. He moved into fourth place on the UP career charts for blocks and now has 94 all-time.
Freshman point guard JoJo Walker played 27 strong minutes and finished with eight points, three rebounds, and two steals. Redshirt freshman Malcolm Porter started and played 23 minutes alongside Walker and scored six points with four assists.
Canda paced five Vikings in double figures with 18 points, while Traylin Farris added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Portland will look to even its record when it takes the court at the Chiles Center for a doubleheader on Tuesday night. The Pilot women host Utah Valley at 5 p.m. followed by the men against Walla Walla at 7:30 p.m. Both games will have video coverage on TheW.tv, while radio coverage for the men begins at 7 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland.
