SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland freshman guard Marcus Shaver Jr. was named to the All-West Coast Conference Freshman Team and earned honorable mention all-league recognition, the WCC announced on Tuesday. The league accumulated votes from all ten head coaches to determine conference awards.
Jock Landale of Saint Mary's was named the WCC Player of the Year, while Mark Few garnered Coach of the Year honors. Namdi Okonkwo of Pacific was voted Defensive Player of the Year and Zach Norvell of Gonzaga took Newcomer of the Year honors.
In addition to being one of the five players on the All-Freshman Team, Shaver Jr. Norvell and Pepperdine's Colbey Ross were the only three freshmen to earn All-WCC honorable mention status.
Shaver Jr. is the first Pilot to earn All-WCC Freshman Team honors since Taishi Ito in 2007 and first UP freshman to garner honorable mention status since Donald Wilson in 2003.
The Phoenix, Ariz. native led the Pilots in scoring (12.6) and steals (31) during the regular season and finished No. 3 overall in the conference in free throw percentage (.856). His free throw percentage ranks 10th in UP single-season history, while his 377 points are No. 4 in Portland history among all freshmen.
In league games, Shaver Jr. was the No. 3 freshman scorer (12.6) and No. 9 among all players in steals per game (1.1).
He reached double figures scoring 21 teams, reached 20 or more three games, and led the team in scoring on nine occasions this season.
Shaver and the Pilots enter the West Coast Conference Championships in Las Vegas as the tournament's No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 Loyola Marymount in the opening round. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. The winner will move on to face WCC champion Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinals.
