SALEM, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams continued their outdoor season at the 2018 Willamette Invite at the Charles Bowles Track in Salem, Ore. The Pilots recorded nine top-5 performances on the day.
 
Sophomores Joe Horen and Matt Schumann highlighted the day, with Horen running a personal best of 9:08.14 to win the men's 3000m steeplechase and Schumann setting a new personal record of 4:03.11 to win his heat of the 1500m. Horen's time was a full 10-seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Sophomore Tristan Peloquin and junior Malcolm Roux also each placed second in their respective events of the 5000m and 1500m.
 
"Lots of great efforts today under very cold and rainy conditions," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "Very good job across the board."
 
On the women's side, sophomore Maya Murphy-Cook placed second in the 100m hurdles (15.21) and fourth in the high jump (1.53m), while junior Courtney Vacek placed second overall in the triple jump with a jump of 11.50 meters. Sophomore Susan Van Weperen crossed the 1500m finish line in 4:56.09 and Katelyn Schultz finished her 800m race in 2:21.02, with both placing in the top-5 in their respective events.
 
"Our hurdlers looked good and Katelyn Schultz did a nice job to win her 800 head," said women's head coach Ian Solof.
 
Next week, the Pilots will travel south to compete in the Stanford Invite in Palo Alto, California.
