PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland has signed Jacob Tryon (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS/East Los Angeles JC) to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, head coach Terry Porter announced. Tryon will join the Pilots with three years of on-court eligibility remaining.
Tryon (7-0, 220) is a mobile big that shot 50 percent from three-point range in his one season at East Los Angeles College. He averaged 12.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots per game. Tryon shot 57 percent overall from the field and 68 percent at the foul line.
"Jacob is a great stretch forward with good length," said Porter. "His shooting range extends well out into three-point land. Jacob creates mismatches on the offensive end, allowing him to use his size and strength to his advantage. Jacob is a great addition to the Pilot Basketball program and we cannot wait to see where he takes us."
Tryon was a three-year varsity starter at Great Oak High School where he became the school's all-time leader in blocked shots with 381. He earned All-Southwestern League honors each season. Tryon garnered first team all-league as a junior (2015) and senior (2016), and second team recognition his sophomore season. He averaged 15.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.5 blocked shots per game his senior season.
Tryon spent one year after high school training with the Eleate Player Development Program in Riverside, Calif. before enrolling at East Los Angeles College.
"Portland has believed in me and recruited me all year," Tryon said of his decision to sign with the Pilots. "I know that they are graduating some size and have an exciting young team, so it was a good fit. The coaches have shown that they have faith in me and can help me reach my basketball potential. The staff has so much experience at all levels of basketball, from major college to the NBA. I'm happy to have found a home at Portland and I am eager to be a part of building something special."
Tryon joins previously signed post player
Josh Phillips as members of Portland's 2018 recruiting class. The Pilots will also add to the mix 2017-18 returning redshirts Crisshawn Clark, Takiula Fahrensohn, Hugh Hogland and Xavier Hallinan next season.
