PROVO, Utah --- The Brigham Young University Cougars snapped the University of Portland's seven-game winning streak with a 69-57 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Marriott Center. The Cougars improve to 8-3 on the season, while the Pilots drop to 10-4.
Senior guard Laiken Dollente led Portland with 16 points, while sophomore forward Natalie Day added 15 points.
Coriann Wood came off of the BYU bench to score a game-high 17 points, while Mindy Bonham and Haley Hall added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The difference in the game was turnovers, as Portland committed 19 to just six for the host Cougars. BYU gained a 23-7 margin in points off of turnovers for the contest.
Portland outrebounded BYU 46-37, but struggled offensively. The Pilots shot just 35 percent from the field and went 3-for-10 from the three-point line. BYU was held to 41 percent from the floor and 25 percent from the three-point line.
After a sluggish start by both teams, the Cougars took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Wood with 12:17 left in the first half for a 9-6 advantage. BYU would push the margin 13 before settling for a 40-29 halftime lead.
BYU maintained a double-digit lead through the entire second half, with the largest margin of 18 points. Portland battled back to within 12 on two occasions midway through the period, but the Cougars answered each time.
Portland will return home to host the Seattle University Redhawks on Sunday at 2 p.m. in their final non-conference matchup before West Coast Conference play.
