FRESNO, Calif. --- For the second straight game the Portland Pilots failed to hold a late lead en route to a 9-7 loss to Cal State Bakersfield at the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic at Beiden Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Pilots carried a 7-0 lead into the eighth inning, but the Roadrunners erupted for nine runs in the frame to secure the win.
The Pilots (8-7) got another good start from sophomore left-hander Scott Burris who went 7.0-plus innings and allowed just four hits. He was tagged for three earned runs – all in the eighth inning – after opening the inning with a walk and back-to-back singles before giving way to the bullpen.
It took four relievers to get through the frame as the Roadrunners (4-7) racked up nine runs on seven hits and four walks. The Pilots went down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings as CSUB freshman reliever Jacob Valenzuela picked up his first career save.
Portland took the initial lead in the second inning on an RBI single by right fielder Austin Pearce after senior first baseman Cort Carpenter doubled.
The Pilots extended it to 4-0 with a three-run homer by Carpenter, his third of the season. Sophomore DH Clayton Shaw added a leadoff home run in the fifth and Portland added two more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Bryant Kraus and a fielding error by the Roadrunners.
Burris did not get the victory for the first time in four starts this season. Sophomore Zach Varce (1-3) was saddled with the loss, while freshman LHP Jonathan Montoya earned the win after tossing 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, four walks and five earned runs.
CSUB had 10 hits, two errors and left eight men on base, while Portland had nine hits, no errors and stranded six runners.
Carpenter was 2-for-3 with a double, homer, two runs and three RBIs, while Pearce was the only other Pilot with two hits. Carpenter is now second on the team with a .394 average and leads the Pilots with 14 runs batted in.
Portland carried a 6-5 lead into the ninth inning on Tuesday before also falling by a 9-7 margin.
The Pilots will continue action on Thursday when they play tournament host and defending national champion Fresno State at 6 p.m.
