PORTLAND, Ore. --- Several hundred children and adults attended the 15th annual University of Portland Reading Fair on Sunday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chiles Center. Among the numerous volunteers at the event were Pilot student-athletes from various sports organized by Purple Reign, the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The popular annual event draws children from around the Portland metro area. This year’s theme was “Bats, Balls, and Books: Come Have a Field Day with Reading!” and was free and open to the public. Each child received a free book for attending.
The fair is especially designed for children pre-school age through grade 5. However, middle school students and even infants enjoyed the activities. In addition to a wide variety of books for children to peruse, the fair also included a beanbag toss and obstacle course among other games and activities. University students staffed booths featuring bookmark making, face painting, and fishing for prizes. Penny's Puppet Productions performed The Tortoise and the Hare as well.
The University’s School of Education and Kappa Delta Pi (honor society) sponsored the fair. Other supporters included the Associated Students of University of Portland (ASUP), University Bookstore, Bon Appetit Management Company, and New Renaissance Bookshop.
