PULLMAN, Wash. --- UC Davis handed Portland its first loss of the season as the Aggies defeated the Pilots 3-0 in a non-conference volleyball match at the Nike Cougar Classic at Bohler Gym on Saturday morning. The Aggies clamed the match by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-23.
Portland (1-1) opened play at the tourney with a 3-0 over Montana State on Friday afternoon.
The Pilots featured a balanced attack as the sisters Clemens, senior Maria and junior Jessica, each connected for a team-high eight kills, while sophomore Kati Hronek added seven. Jessica Clemens also stayed busy defensively, finishing with a match-high 12 digs.
Senior Kaylyn Jones and freshman Madison Smith again shared the setting duties, handing out 19 and 10 assists, respectively. UP sophomore Marissa Plummer was active at the net, coming up with three solo blocks. She also had three block assists as Portland totaled nine as a team.
Allison Whitson had a match-high 12 kills to lead UC Davis (1-1), while Carson Lowden finished with 27 assists. Betsy Sedlak recorded seven block assists to help the Aggies finish with 10 blocks total.
UC Davis seized control of the first set early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Pilots then trailed 14-7 before going on a minor run. Jessica Clemens capped an 8-4 Portland spurt with a kill to make it 18-15. But the Aggies would score seven of the final 10 points to claim the set.
The Pilots were the aggressors in the second set as Jessica Clemens again found her mark with a pair of kills to help Portland build an 8-5 lead. The Aggies responded and would force three times before claiming an 18-13 advantage. UC Davis would hold off Portland from there en route to the six-point win.
After trailing by four late in the third set, the Pilots would rally. But after a kill from Plummer pulled the Pilots within 21-20, the Aggies regrouped and would hold on for the win.
The Pilots next conclude their stay in Pullman by facing host school Washington State at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The Cougars took care of UC Davis 3-1 on Friday and battled Montana State on Saturday afternoon.
Portland’s first home match is set for Wednesday night as Oregon State visits the Chiles Center for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
