PULLMAN, Wash. --- The Washington State Cougars held off the Portland Pilots 3-0 in a non-conference volleyball match to conclude play at the Nike Cougar Classic on Saturday night at Bohler Gym. The Cougs won 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18 to claim the tourney title.
The Pilots now sit at 1-2 on the season, while Wazzu improves to a perfect 3-0.
UP got another strong performance from junior Jessica Clemens, who finished with a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore Kati Hronek had her best performance of the young season with 10 kills. Senior Kaylyn Jones handed out 26 assists, while freshman Madison Smith had 14. Clemens posted the double-double with 11 digs.
WSU’s Jackie Albright led the Cougar attack with 16 kills, while Renee Bordelon dished out an impressive 39 assists.
Clemens and sophomore Marissa Plummer were named to the all-tournament team.
Portland next returns home for its home opener of the 2009 season as Oregon State visits for a 7:00 p.m. match on Wednesday night at the Chiles Center. UP then welcomes New Mexico and American University to town for the Nike Invitational, which begins on Thursday at the Chiles Center.
