PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero was named the West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after helping the Pilots win the 2009 Husky Fever Classic last weekend in Seattle, Wash. Guerrero made ten saves and allowed just one goal during the weekend as the Pilots defeated Cal Poly 2-0 on Friday and No. 17 Creighton 2-1 on Sunday.
The 2-0 blanking of Cal Poly is Guerrero’s second shutout this season and the 13th of his career, which ranks fifth all-time in UP program history. The Chula Vista, Calif., native then made a season-high nine stops against the Bluejays on Sunday, including two in the closing minute to preserve the upset. Guerrero lowered his goals against average to 0.97 on the season.
At 5-1-1, the 18th-ranked Pilots are off to their best start to a season since 2000, when Portland also sat at 5-1-1 after seven games. The Pilots have won four straight matches and are riding a six-game unbeaten streak going into their WCC opener at Santa Clara at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
