BOISE, Idaho --- Senior guard Tara Cronin scored 19 points and junior wing Natalie Day added 17 as the Portland Pilots opened the 2010-11 season with an emphatic 83-76 win over the Boise State Broncos at corralled a team-high eight rebounds.
Portland (1-0) grabbed the lead early and would never relinquish it, leading from the opening tip to the closing buzzer. In the first half, Gannis gave UP its first double-digit lead with a lay-up that made it 23-13 with 9:48 remaining. Moments later, a pair of Gannis free throws made it 25-13, Portland’s biggest lead of the first 20 minutes.
After taking a 40-34 lead into the locker room, the Pilots would push the lead back to double-digits, courtesy back-to-back field goals by Gannis, who made 47-35 with 17:26 remaining. Boise State (0-1) would hang around though, with the result of the game in doubt during the game’s final four minutes. But the Pilots would tighten up on defense and not allow BSU any closer than three points down the stretch.
Gannis finished with 14 points on six of 11 shooting, while Cronin was 5-for-8 from the floor. Cronin hit all six of her free throws and shot 3-for-4 from behind the three-point arc.
Day hit six of 12 shots as Portland had five players total reach double figures in scoring. Junior wing Nakeisha Brown finished with 15 points, while junior guard ReZina TecleMariam added 12 points. TecleMariam also matched Cronin with a game-high six assists and Brown hit three three-pointers. Day and TecleMariam were active on the glass, with each finishing with seven boards.
Boise State was led by Lauren Lenhardt, who scored a game-high 24 points.
UP shot 40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the floor, went six of 16 on three-pointers and shot 25-from-31 from the foul line. BSU was 27-for-60 (45.0 percent) overall, six of 15 on three’s and 16-for-20 from the charity stripe.
Both teams had 38 rebounds, while the Pilots won the battle of the turnovers, 15-24.
The Pilots next travel to Cheney, Wash., for a game against the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
