CORVALLIS, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots led early, but the No. 12 Oregon State Beavers scored late and claimed a 9-2 win during the final game of the OSU Spring Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The loss caps UP’s stay in Corvallis, which included four games in two days.
Portland (10-5) struck first against the Beavers (10-3), notching two runs in the top of the first inning. With one out and runners on second and third, freshman 1B Brian Frattali drilled a double down the left-field line that scored two and gave the Pilots the early 2-0 advantage.
UP left-handed starter Scott Burris (0-1), a junior, started the game strong, retiring the first 12 batters he faced. But he ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning when OSU got to him for six runs on six hits. Only three of the runs were earned as the Pilots committed a costly error. Five players knocked in a run during the frame with Ryan Gorton coming up with a big two-run double.
Still leading 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Beavers added three insurance runs on a pair of sacrifice flies and an RBI single by Parker Berberet.
After a rocky first inning, Oregon State starter Tanner Robles (3-1) settled down to work into the seventh. He allowed just two more hits following the two-hit, two-run first, while recording seven strikeouts. Kraig Sitton pitched the final 2.1 innings, striking out three.
Burris finished with a line of six runs, three earned, in 4.2 innings. He scattered five hits. Four relievers followed Burris out of the UP bullpen, with freshman Matt McCallister and junior Keeler Brynteson each getting touched for runs.
OSU out-hit the Pilots 9-5. The Pilots opened the tourney with a 4-1 win over Utah on Saturday morning, but they’d drop their next three.
Portland’s lengthy trip away from home continues with a three-game series against Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, next weekend. The Pilots and Wolverines open the series with a 5:00 p.m. (Pacific) game on Friday night.
