PORTLAND, Ore. --- Senior Natalie Day scored a game-high 22 points to lead four Pilots in double figures as Portland rolled to an 80-36 win over the Concordia Cavaliers in an exhibition women’s basketball game at the Chiles Center on Sunday afternoon. Day just missed a double-double, finishing with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Pilots took a sizeable lead in the first half and never looked back. Day had 16 points at the break and ReZina TecleMariam added 12 to help the Pilots take a 43-19 lead into the locker room. It was more of the same in the second stanza as UP held the Cavaliers to just 17 points after half.
Day shot 10-for-15 overall, while eight of her rebounds came on the offensive end. Her efforts on the glass helped the Pilots to a 48-36 advantage on the glass.
TecleMariam, who finished with 13 points, made all three of her three-pointers, meaning she did not miss from behind the arc during UP’s two exhibition wins. The senior was a perfect five-for-five last Wednesday when Portland defeated Seattle Pacific.
A pair of sophomores, Cassandra Brown and Amy Pupa, also reached double figures for Portland. Brown hit two three’s en route to 10 points, while most of Pupa’s 10 points came from the free throw line.
Concordia, which turned the ball over 33 times, was led by Courtney May with 11 Points.
Both Day and TecleMariam were active defensively as both made five steals. Portland as a team finished with 23 swipes.
The Pilots shot 41.4 percent (29-for-41) from the floor, while holding the Cavaliers to just 23.5 percent (12-for-51). The Pilots also connected on eight three-pointers and went 14-for-16 at the line. Concordia was nine-for-19 on free throws and hit just three three-pointers.
Portland was helped by a 36-10 advantage in points in the paint and a 42-14 edge in points off of turnovers. UP’s bench outscored that of CU by a 28-14 margin, while Portland also registered 11 blocked shots. Redshirt-freshman Elyse Snyder had three blocks.
The Pilots next open the regular season at home on Friday night when Montana State visits for a 6 p.m. game at the Chiles Center.
