USAF ACADEMY, Colo. --- The Air Force Falcons picked up a 10-2 win over Portland at Falcon Field on Sunday to register a four-game sweep of the Pilots during the weekend. The Falcons compiled 15 hits during Sunday’s win.
The Pilots (8-10) scored the game’s first run with a tally in the top of the second inning, but Air Force (11-10) responded by scoring nine runs during the following four innings to take command. UP’s only other run came in the top of the fifth, while the Falcons added one in the bottom of the eighth.
Portland starter Matt McCallister (0-2) was touched for 10 hits in 3.1 innings, while surrendering eight runs. The right-hander struck out one and walked one. Chad Kjemhus, Scott Burris and J.R. Bunda also saw action out of the UP bullpen.
Michael Ceci (2-3) held Portland to the two runs on eight hits. He fanned a pair and walked just one. Three Air Force relievers combined to hold the Pilots scoreless during the final three innings.
Matt Mardesich gave UP the early lead when he blasted a solo home run to left field in the second inning. But the lead was short-lived as the Falcons scored two in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Thorne’s two-run single gave the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish.
Craig Smith brought home Portland’s only other run with an RBI single in the fifth. His base hit scored Kris Kauppila, who had led off with a double.
Blair Roberts had a big game for Air Force, going 4-for-4 at the plate. He also scored twice and notched two RBI’s. Smith, Kauppila and Mardesich each had two of Portland’s nine hits.
Portland next returns home to host the Concordia Cavaliers on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field. The game is make-up from a rained out contest earlier this season.
