ENTRY #10

Good Afternoon!
On this fine, sunny Thursday, we are in Spokane about to play our first regular season game against Gonzaga. We are eager to get the second half of our season started. In celebration of our first conference game, I have a special treat for you all: an exclusive interview with Emily Sippel herself! Sippy was kind enough to take some time out of her busy schedule to sit down and talk with me. We discussed everything from her red hair to bullies to Old Spice. Enjoy!
15.5 Questions with Emily Sippel
Hello Sippy, anything you say can and will be held against you. Shall we begin?
Yes
So Sippy, tell me a little bit about yourself...
Is this serious? I’m scared what is going on. Seriously (side note: for some reason Sippy is skeptical about my intentions of this interview. I assure her I just simply want to know more about her). Ok...I am a sophomore from Beaverton, Oregon, this is going on your blog right? And I play midfield and forward. I’m majoring in biology
You are a warrior. You have overcome three ACL tears, that’s three more than I’d ever care to have. How does it feel to be back healthy (knock on wood, cross my fingers) and playing?
It feels really good. I definitely feel blessed to be able to play here and have this opportunity. It’s exciting to be able to play with people of great caliber. This is really weird and I feel like something else is going on (side note: Sippy is still hesitant)
Your teammates, not me of course, seem to pick on you a lot. Why do you think that’s so?
Honestly, I have no idea. I try to figure this out every day. I feel like people use me as the little sister they never had (side note: I think Sippy is finally starting to open up and take this interview seriously)
Your mother makes a mean enchilada dish. Who is the meanest person on the team?
I wouldn’t say any one person, but it escalates once it starts. For instance, despite my sophomore status, I am continually referred to as a freshman. If anyone is looking for anyone to blame for anything, Sippy is their first and automatic response. (Side note: to find out more check out your local library for “Sippy’s Sad Sad Life”)
INTERMISSION:
I think this is the appropriate time to mention that after this interview, Kaila, Sippy and I went to Chili’s for dinner. Half the team was already waiting for a table so we asked if we could join them. Nichole and Sippy were discussing splitting the team up so we could get our food faster. Nichole responded “we can just do seven and one and Sippy can sit by herself.” It is these kinds of comments that Sippy is faced with every day. These harsh words are downright disrespectful to say to such a brilliant, young woman. I decided to do some more investigation and asked each individual at dinner, “Why do you pick on Sippy?” Here’s what I found...
“Because Sarah was making fun of her the first time I met her” - Dees
“I don’t. Sippy is my little brother. She picks on me” - Sarah
“Because it’s Sippy” - Frisbie
“Because she’s the only true ginger on the team” - Taylor
“She’s our favorite freshman... I mean sophomore” - Nichole
“Sippy plays the victim, but she is the bully” - Lorielle
END OF INTERMISSION
Do you have anything to say to all the bullies out there?
(Long deep pause) I don’t get mad, I get even (side note: what people don’t know is that while Sippy unjustly gets picked on, she can also dish it out as well. Let’s just say, I’m lucky I will be gone by the time she is a senior)
I’ve told you several times you remind me of my brother because you don’t realize your own strength. When you give me a “friendly” shoulder tap, it feels as though you are trying to start a fight with me. From where does this aggression stem from?
I wouldn’t say its aggression, I just show my love in different ways than others
What do you do when you aren’t playing soccer?
A lot of homework. Hang out with people on the team, go on bike rides, watch Criminal Minds, ya...
Alright now let’s get into some more serious questions... Do you believe in love at first sight?
No. I just believe love is more than “sight”. To love someone you need to get to know them first.
INTERRUPTED by a phone call from Sarah Bridges... Two minutes later she storms into the room and exclaims “I’m really mad, I got an 89% on my history paper.” With that comment, I told her to leave the room immediately.
What kind of deodorant do you use?
Old Spice
What’s your greatest fear?
Open water
What’s something people don’t know about you?
I don’t like that question. I don’t know what people don’t know about me
Do you like having fiery red hair?
Ummm ya, I guess. I don’t think about it much
If you could have a superpower what would it be?
I have to pick one? To fly. Do you want a because? Because I don’t know
Would you rather eat a shot glass full of wasps or the shot glass itself?
The shot glass itself. Well, full of live wasps? Actually I changed my mind, wasps, sorry. Because they are animals and its better than eating glass (side note: if any of you are ever faced with this debacle, either option is fine as long as you have a blender to grind up the substance of your choice)
Anything else you’d like to add?
No.
Well, there you have it. You heard it here first, from Emily Sippel herself. One positive thing about Sippy’s aggression is that it always translates onto the field. She’s ready to make it nasty against Gonzaga. After this game, we head back to Portland for another game this Saturday at 7 p.m. against BYU. In the words of Sippy, “You better be there to cheer us on! And I do mean that in the least aggressive way possible.” Sure ya do Sippy.
Life,
KJ
