MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland’s Amanda Frisbie scored twice and junior goalkeeper Erin Dees made six saves as the Pilots shutout the Saint Mary’s Gaels 3-0 in a West Coast Conference women’s soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Stadium. Frisbie registers her third multi-goal game of the season, and she notches her second game-winner.
Portland picks up its second straight road win to improve to 8-4-3 on the year and to 2-1-1 in the WCC. Saint Mary’s drops to 6-9-2 overall and 1-4-0 in the conference.
Frisbie’s first goal came just 90 seconds into the match. The junior from McKinney, Texas, gained possession near the right sideline, took a couple of touches towards the middle of the field and unleashed a world class strike from 30 yards out that dropped inside the top left corner of the frame.
The forward then gave Portland a 2-nil lead when she found the back of the net in the 18th minute. Sarah Bridges sent a ball forward from the back, Emily Sippel flicked it on and Frisbie finished from 10 yards out for her team-best ninth goal of the season.
Kaila Cameli then capped the scoring with her eighth goal of the year in the 76th minute. On a free kick from right of the 18-yard box, Michelle Cruz drove a low line drive towards the right post. That’s where Cameli was able to re-direct the ball into the right corner of the net.
It’s the third shutout of the fall for Dees, who made a handful of clutch saves in the second half to preserve the blank slate. In the 52nd minute, Dees came off her line to deny a shot from Caroline Beaulne, who had sprung free in the box.
Then in the 63rd minute, Katy Roby had a wide open look near the left post and hit a shot from eight yards out. This time Dees made a tough, one-handed save to knock the ball away.
Portland finished with a 15-10 advantage in overall shots, which included a shot from Sippel that hit the left post in the 85th minute.
The Pilots next head back to Portland for a pair of WCC games next weekend at Merlo Field. First on Friday, the Pilots are set to host the Pepperdine Waves at 7 p.m. LMU then visits for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
