SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland Pilots junior Steven Evans landed on the All-West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer First Team for the second straight year, while seven Pilots total received all-league recognition. Senior Ricardo Carrillo and sophomore Derek Boggs were both named to the All-WCC Second Team.
Evans, a Portland native, finished second in the conference this season in goals (14) and points (31), while ranking eighth and 16th in those two categories nationally. Evans also had three assists this fall and a team-high three game-winners, and he became the first UP men’s soccer player to register a hat trick in nine years. The Central Catholic graduate earned All-WCC First Team honors as a junior last season and he was named the league’s freshman of the year in 2010.
Carrillo finished second on the team in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). The native of Prineville, Ore., was also named the league’s player of the week in late October, and he scored the third fastest goal in program history when he scored 37 seconds into the win over Gonzaga on Sept. 26. Carrillo earned all-conference honorable mention last fall and landed on the all-freshman team in 2010.
Boggs, who originally hails from Sandy, Utah, played in the midfield this season before taking over as the starting center back. He helped the Pilots register three shutouts, while also handing out two assists. As a freshman last fall, Boggs garnered all-conference honorable mention, while also landing all-freshman accolades.
Senior Keith Grubisich, sophomore Michael Escobar and freshman Jaime Velasco each nabbed All-WCC Honorable Mention honors, while defender Hugo Rhoads joined Velasco on the WCC’s All-Freshman Team.
San Diego’s Seamus McFadden was recognized as the 2012 WCC Coach of the Year after leading the Toreros to the league title. Santa Clara senior Erik Hurtado is the WCC Player of the Year and Saint Mary's senior Trevor Newquist is the WCC Defensive Player of the Year.
