Box Score
SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland’s Kari Luttinen, Cassandra Thompson and Annika Holopainen each scored 11 points, but the Boston College Eagles built a large first-half lead en route to a 68-40 win over the Pilots in the consolation game of the Washington Dental Thanksgiving Tournament played on Saturday night at Seattle University’s Connolly Center.
The Pilots drop to 1-5 on the young season, while the Eagles improve to 4-2.
The Pilots had the momentum early as Holopainen hit a three-pointer and made a lay-up to give the Pilots a 7-6 lead nearly seven minutes in. But BC would score 11 unanswered points to build a double-digit lead. Boston College’s lead would only grow from there as the Eagles entered the halftime locker room with a sizable 38-14 advantage.
The Pilots fared better on offense during the second half and would climb within 15 points when Holopainen converted a lay-up with 14:37 remaining. But the Boston College lead would prove to be too large to overcome as the Eagles would hold on for the win.
Holopainen finished four of eight from the floor and hit her only three-point attempt.
Thompson had a strong showing in Seattle, following her career-best 15-point outing on Friday night with another double-digit performance. The sophomore from Athol, Idaho, was named to the all-tournament team and she's now second on the Pilots in scoring with a 9.8 per game mark.
Luttinen, Portland’s leading scorer and a native of Seattle, has scored in double figures five times this season.
Kerri Shields led Boston College with a game-high 17 points. Kristen Doherty had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Pilots shot 33 percent from the field, hit only two three-pointers and went six of 21 from the free throw line. Boston College combined to shoot 45 percent and connected on 11 three’s. The Eagles also held a 42-29 edge in rebounds.
Portland’s stretch of six straight road games to open the season comes to an end next week when the Pilots welcome the Washington Huskies to the Chiles Center for a non-conference game on Thursday night. Tip-off between the Pilots and Huskies is set for 7 p.m.
