SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots varsity four opened the spring season by defeating the Washington Huskies by six seconds at the Husky Open at the Montlake Cut on Saturday. UP’s novice eight finished second to the Huskies, while the open eight placed third.
“We really appreciated the hospitality Washington showed us throughout the weekend,” said Portland head coach Bill Zack. “It was a very positive learning experience for the team. They raced well and it was nice to see our top four come away with the victory.”
Portland’s varsity four was in control for the entire 2,000 meters against the Huskies, finishing with a time of 08:07.38. UW’s time was 08:13.43
The Huskies did bounce back to claim the novice eight, although it was a back-and-forth race for the first 1,500 meters. The Huskies then got their advantage once they got into the cut. UW’s time of 07:52.03 was just four seconds better than the Pilots’ time of 07:56.54.
Portland’s open eight then posted a time of 07:34.13.
“We’ll be back up there for the Opening Day Regatta,” said Zack, “and the familiarity that they developed this weekend should really be helpful.”
Before Portland’s return trip to Seattle on May 5, the Pilots will be in Eugene, Ore., for the Covered Bridge Regatta on April 14.
