Past UP Student-Athletes of the Year (pdf)
PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland has selected soccer standouts Danielle Foxhoven and Ryan Kawulok as its 2011-12 Fr. Chester Prusynski Student-Athletes of the Year. The award annually recognizes the top University of Portland student-athletes based on athletic and academic credentials.
As a senior last fall, Foxhoven was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and was a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist. A native of Littleton, Colo., Foxhoven landed on the All-West Coast Conference Second Team, was named Preseason All-WCC and was a Soccer America Preseason All-American.
Foxhoven concluded her stellar career with the fourth most goals (57) in school history, trailing only Christine Sinclair, Tiffeny Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan. She also ranks third in career shots on-goal (141), fourth in points (139), sixth in overall shots (249) and goals per game (0.66), tied for seventh in game-winners (15) and ranks eighth in points per game (1.60). The forward started all 21 games as a senior and led the team with eight goals, while adding two assists for a team-high 18 points. Her three game-winners matched a team-high, and she helped lead the Pilots past the opening round of the NCAA playoffs for the 12th consecutive year.
Foxhoven was called into the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team Training Camp in January, and she was selected by the Philadelphia Independence 17th overall in the WPS Draft.
Foxhoven, who landed on the WCC All-Academic First Team and the Academic All-District 8 Second Team, graduated with a degree in marketing & management and a 3.38 cumulative GPA.
Kawulok, a native of Fort Collins, was named the 2011 WCC Defensive Player of the Year. The center back, who started all 82 games during his four-year career, is only the second UP player to ever land the league’s defensive player of the year award, joining former goalkeeper Luis Robles (2006). Kawulok was also named to the All-WCC First Team for the second consecutive season. He scored two goals last fall, had two assists and registered one game-winner.
Kawulok is currently with the Portland Timbers, who selected him with the eighth pick of Major League Soccer’s 2012 Supplemental Draft in January.
Kawulok graduated with a degree in marketing & management and a 3.18 GPA.
Foxhoven, who was also named the UP Student-Athlete of the Year as a sophomore in 2010, becomes the 12th consecutive soccer player to win the award on the women’s side. Kawulok is the first men’s soccer player to be honored since Nate Jaqua was named the UP Student-Athlete of the Year in 2003.
The Fr. Chester Prusynski Student-Athlete of the Year award is the most prestigious University honor for student-athletes and is presented annually to one male and one female who have excelled both in athletics and in the classroom. Winners are selected by a vote of athletic administrators. The name of the award was changed in the summer of 2010 in honor of Rev. Chester Prusynski, C.S.C., who served the University community and was a fixture at Pilot athletic events for nearly 50 years.
