PORTLAND, Ore. --- Micaela Capelle netted the game-winner and the Pilots picked up their second shutout of the year as Portland blanked the Oregon Ducks 2-0 before a capacity crowd at Merlo Field on Friday night. 4,912 fans packed the stands to watch the No. 11 Pilots improve to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Ducks drop to 1-1-0.
Capelle’s goal came early as the Pilots jumped ahead 1-0 just 2:30 into the game. Ellen Parker sent a perfect ball to Capelle in the right-side of the 18-yard box, and the junior forward had no problem finishing inside the left post for her first goal of the year. It’s also the first assist this season for Parker.
Portland’s one-goal lead would stand the rest of the half, despite Oregon’s Scout Libke nearly equalizing in the 29th minute. Libke drilled a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that rattled the cross bar before bouncing away.
The Ducks continued to apply pressure early in the second half, getting a couple of quality looks. Achijah Berry nearly found herself in a one-v-one opportunity with UP goalkeeper Erin Dees in the 50th minute, but she settled with a shot from the top of the box that was just wide of the goal.
The Pilots then tightened up on defense, and soon it was Portland getting several good looks at the other end of the field. In the 74th minute, junior forward Amanda Frisbie cracked a shot towards the top shelf on a free kick from 20 out. Oregon keeper Abby Steele just did get a hand on the shot, redirecting it off the crossbar.
Moments later junior forward Kaila Cameli absolutely drilled a shot that Steele was fortunate to get her hands up in time and knock the ball away.
It was then Cameli’s speed that forced Oregon into an own-goal in the 86th minute. Junior defender Kendall Johnson sent a long ball over the top, which Cameli and an Oregon defender chased after. It was then the Oregon player who unintentionally poked the ball over her own keeper and into the net.
The Pilots finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots, which included a 9-3 edge in shots on-goal. The Pilots also had seven corners to Oregon’s two.
Dees finished with three saves for her second blank slate of the year and her eighth career shutout. Steele made seven stops on the night.
The Pilots next hit the road for the first time this season as they head to Seattle for the Husky Invitational next weekend. On Friday, UP is set to play Fresno State at 4:30 p.m. on the University of Washington campus. The Pilots will then face La Salle on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
